Living in Akolea

Homes at Akolea are either 1-story or 2-story and range from 3 bedroom to 5 bedroom units with spacious, open floorplans. The original developers designed 7 different floorplans, with interior spaces ranging from 1,703 through 2,651 square feet. These homes are pretty spacious and are set in a calm, serene area that feels like a vacation getaway. Whether you prefer to relax outside or stay indoors, these homes (and lots) are spacious and accommodating to families both large and small.

Interior features of the homes may vary, given that previous homeowners may have remodeled or even built additions to the original plans. Originally, these homes sold very quickly after they went on the market, so I would expect them to also become very popular as resale homes. The units feature open floorplans with separate laundry rooms and oversized master bedroom closets and bathrooms. The kitchens provide plenty of storage space, and the homes open up to shaded backyard lanais. These features add to the comfort and value of the Akolea residences.

You’ll find that many of these homes are part of cul-de-sac communities, which is great for the slowing of traffic, especially if you have children playing outside. Lot sizes are pretty large and range from around 7,000 through 16,000 square feet. Many of the homes include fenced-in backyards and paved driveways with the convenience of attached multi-car garages. Lot and floorplan designs provide space for residents to enjoy their privacy but also connect with nearby neighbors within the cul-de-sac.

Exploring the Area

Akolea rests in a beautiful location that allows for a feeling of remote relaxation without having to be too far from modern necessities. More specifically, the neighborhood is located beneath Wailuku Heights. This places it in a convenient location where major roads, like Kauno Lipo Drive via Kuikahi Drive and Kehalani Mauka Parkway, can be accessed without difficulty. The neighborhood is a quick drive from the Kahului Airport and the University of Hawaii Maui College.

Additionally, Akolea is close to Lao Valley, a wonderful space for hiking. In fact, the Kehalani development provides numerous parks as well as hiking and biking trails that intertwine throughout the community, making it easy for residents to enjoy the outdoors and maintain their physical fitness. Since Akolea is a pet-friendly community, you’ll be able to take your pets on walks through the park. The community features a 13-acre park in addition to numerous smaller neighborhood parks.

While the Kehalani development is located in a mountainous region, that doesn’t mean it is far away from everything else! In fact, the community is within a 20-minute drive from the North Shore, West Maui, and South Maui beaches. There are 3 golf courses located within a 10-minute drive. There are retail stores within the actual community, but if you can’t find something you need, other commercial areas are located just a short drive away.

Since the community is near Wailuku, residents can easily reach schools, commercial outlets, and sources of entertainment. You can catch a show at the MACC or movie theater and then get dinner at one of the local restaurants. You’ll have the amenities associated with Central Maui within about a 10-minute drive but still be able to maintain your space from the crowds in the Akolea community.

Families looking to experience beautiful, panoramic mountain views should definitely add Akolea to their list of places to consider. With larger lots and fenced-in yards, you’ll be able to enjoy quiet privacy while still remaining close to school and work. Given the increased elevation, the climate is cooler and makes for comfortable walking, hiking, and biking temperatures. Check out Akolea to truly experience the serenity of the West Maui Mountains.

Kehalani—A Beautifully Planned Development

If you haven’t yet heard of Kehalani, you’ll definitely want to check it out. As one of the two larger master-planned developments on the island of Maui, Kehalani has been in development since the 1990s. Once finished, it is expected to cover 550 acres of land. It will host 2,400 homes that are spread out over 15 different subdivisions. Kehalani is one of the two larger planned communities within the region with average home prices of about $1,000,000.

Kehalani homes are a mixture of single-family residences and condominiums. The different neighborhoods include biking and walking pathways in addition to plenty of parks and green space. Since the development is located at the base of the mountains, residents are sure to enjoy incredible views along with the mild weather associated with higher levels of elevation. The mountains also tend to shade the homes from the blazing afternoon sun, offering an all-around milder way to experience Hawaiian weather.

A convenient feature of Kehalani is the Kehalani Village Center, which is a small commercial development located within the community. This allows for easy access to common necessities, like groceries, the gas station, and the pharmacy. The community is also located near the Maui Memorial Medical Center and the city of Wailuku, a hub for shopping, parks, and cultural amenities in addition to being the home of county buildings. The county buildings provide additional state and federal job opportunities for members of the community.
