Kalihi Homes for Sale

A region within the City of Honolulu, Kalihi is an area with much character. Divided by the Likelike Highway, it is sandwiched between Honolulu to the east, and Moanalua and Salt Lake to the west. To its south west lies the Honolulu Airport.

Various events in history have carved Kalihi into the unique neighborhood that it is today. The first modern wave of residences filled the area in 1940-1969 during World War II and the post war boom. The second wave was built between 1970-1999. Thus, most homes are vintage and well established, with a mix of townhomes, studio, 2-bedroom single family homes, and 3-4 bedroom (medium) sized homes.

Public transport is heavily utilized, and easily accessible in this neighborhood. It's an interesting contrast to the high-level of car ownership in the rest of the United States. The high-density population paired with the lower cost of living makes the area very appealing to small businesses including some of the most popular mom-and-pop eateries on the island. Kalihi residents also enjoy a sense of community via Farmers Markets at the Kalihi Elementary School on Saturdays.

The colorful history of this region also played a large role in forming the culture of Kalihi. Historically, it was a place where cockfighting and prostitution was popular and also a place where many people with leprosy were housed before being sent to Molokai. Despite its rough beginnings, it has dramatically transformed itself to a neighborhood mostly comprised of family-minded individuals, with a majority Asian population.
