A centerpiece of discussion for decades, Kapolei has rapidly ascended towards its long time planned destiny, of becoming Oahu’s Second City. It is currently comprised of 12,000 residences with that number projected to surpass 50,000 in the next 15 years! Shy on growth, it is not.

The spacious city of coastal Kapolei was the chosen second city following decades of mounting concerns over the livability in Honolulu, and its crowded living environment, and commute times. Kapolei was chosen as a new growth area because of its open, flat terrain, easy access to the H-1 freeway, and the appealing commute time to Honolulu’s outer areas and the growing job market. 

While the First City (Honolulu) has moved towards developing trendy skyscrapers to accommodate the increasing lack of space, the westside of Kapolei still has enough space to be a low-rise city, featuring single-family homes and townhomes, a nod to its history of classic Hawaiian plantation homes. Developers are keen on populating the area to keep up with its business expansion, and therefore have been offering highly appealing dollar incentives to prospective residents such as extra upgrades, no closing cost, and lower interest rates which is a huge draw for first-time homeowners.

Development companies have flocked to the area to maintain pace with the expansion timeline goals of the city. The three up and coming communities include Ho’opili, Makaiwa Hills, and Kapolei West. Services and anchor retail companies have also set up shop in the area to cater to the needs of the citizens of this rapidly expanding city. At this point, residents have everything they need within the Kapolei: banking, doctor offices, a large hospital with an ER, schools at all grade levels, senior living and daycare services, a public University, the second-largest shopping mall on Oahu, Kamakana Ali’i, as well as many other shopping centers.
