The second-largest town on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Puna District is a largely rural, predominantly forested area that stretches northeast from Volcanoes National Park to the coast, covering all the area in-between down to the southern coast. Puna consists of over 25 small towns and subdivisions, with many subdivisions having lots of at least one acre. Most of the residential growth is in the upper two-thirds of the district. Homes are in various custom-built styles and sizes, from cottages to large multi-bedroom country houses. Pahoa, a former plantation town, is the central hub of the Puna district, and its many plantation-style homes reflect its heritage. Part of the district, approximately the lower third, is in high lava hazard zones, confirmed by recent Kīlauea lava flows.
