Condos, subdivisions, and custom-home neighborhoods are the result of the dramatic surge in Maui tourism in the 1970s. Early condos bordering or near the coastline come in many Hawaiian-influenced styles. Some condos allow vacation rentals, while others do not. Many lovely contemporary plantation-style subdivisions began construction in the 90s and continued into the second decade of the new century. On gradually rising slopes, most residences are one- and two-story single-family homes on curbed and lighted streets.
