      About Kapolei

Oahu’s thriving “Second City,” Kapolei, is located at the base of the Waianae Mountain Range on the leeward coast. After a plan to transform the former sugarcane and pineapple fields commenced in the 1980s, diverse developers have built an array of housing options. Along with the housing has come new shopping centers, parks, schools, medical centers, government buildings, universities, entertainment, eating options, and more. While Kapolei continues construction, adding even more amenities like Honolulu Rail stops, the plan for development ensures it retains a local community feel.

      History

Kapolei is named after a volcanic hill, Pu‘u O Kapolei, which is found today in Kapolei Regional Park. According to Hawaiian legends, Kapo was the goddess of fertility and the sister to Pele, the goddess of fire. The word “lei” in Kapolei refers to the ring or “lei” of light that is seen around the hill during the winter solstice.

In 1877, Irish businessman James Campbell bought 40,000 acres of land in the Ewa plains (now known as Ewa Beach), which included Kapolei. With the discovery of a water reserve and the building of a well, the dry barren land was transformed into thriving sugar and pineapple plantations.

Due to the passing of Campbell in 1900 and the looming end of the plantation era, the Estate of James Campbell created an “Ewa Master Plan” in 1955, which proposed turning the agricultural land into residential communities. After several revisions of the original plan and the designation of Kapolei as Oahu’s second city, construction began in the late 1980s. Today, many of the original development objectives have been obtained: businesses, government offices, sidewalks, bike lanes, and energy efficient technologies. And with Kapolei’s ongoing growth, the transformation of the once barren land continues.

The name of this “high tech” elementary school was selected for its meaning in relation to the 21st century; the students of Ho‘okele must learn to successfully navigate in an ever-changing world. The 21st-century skills our students will need to excel in our collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking/problem-solving. Through Project Based Learning (PBL) and our Science STEM Program, Project Lead the Way (PLTW), our students have opportunities to authentically work on these skills while focusing on real-world challenging problems or questions. In our first year of opening the school, Thinking Maps were implemented followed by the initial implementation of the Thinking Maps Writing Program, Write From the Beginning and Beyond. Ho‘okele students create visual maps to display their thought process when developing concepts across the content areas to support their writing. To build a cohesive collaborative community and positive culture, the Tribes process was selected to assist the school in attaining this goal. The Tribes process will help our students flourish in a safe, caring environment to gain the knowledge, skills and resiliency to be successful in an ever-changing world,” according to hawaiipublicschools.org.
