Introduction to the Highlands

The Highlands at Kehalani consists of 82 single-family residences built by D.R. Horton. A majority of these residences were completed from the years 2018 through 2020. These 3- and 4-bedroom homes each come with a private, attached 2-car garage in addition to a large driveway. Homes are either single-story or 2-stories and have been built in a modern, Hawaiian-themed style.

Homes generally range from 1,508 through 1,743 square feet in terms of interior living space. There are 4 different floor plans, 2 of which are single-level, while the other 2 have are 2-story. Each home comes with 2 lanais for enjoying the beautiful weather, which tends to be mild, given the elevation of the community. This is wonderful for taking in the curb appeal of the neighborhood and enjoying the views of the West Maui Mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

The Anuenue floor plan is a single-story plan with 1,528 square feet of living space. It features 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The other single-level plan, the Keola, features 1,508 square feet of living space and is a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom unit. Although these floor plans are single-story, the actual amount of living space within these homes is only a bit (between ~100 and 300 square feet) smaller compared to the 2-story floor plans.

Next, we have the Moana, which is a 2-story plan that includes 3-4 bedrooms and 2.5-3 bathrooms. With 1,743 square feet of living space, the Moana also includes an extra family room. Finally, we have the Makani 2-story plan. The Makani includes 1,655 square feet of living space and, like the Moana, features 3-4 bedrooms and 2.5-3 bathrooms. The Makani also incorporates an additional study room which could be utilized as a home office or even a playroom for the kids.

Home Highlights: Outside Features

While the different floor plans include their own particular features, there are common exterior standards that are incorporated throughout the subdivision. For example, each home comes with its own, private garage with a side door and a concrete driveway. The garage door openers are conveniently WiFi-enabled, and the steel doors provide extra insulation. A majority of the homes in the neighborhood also include fenced-in backyards, which is perfect for families who would love to spend time on the covered lanai watching the kids play outside.

Each home comes with several features that are included under warranties. For example, the Hardie cementitious siding comes with a 30-year manufacturer’s material limited warranty. Additionally, the roof is covered by a manufacturer’s lifetime limited warranty. Buyers can feel safe knowing they are investing in homes that are built with quality materials that are protected under these agreements.

The location of the subdivision provides several perks in itself. Electrical lines have been built underground throughout the community, so residents are able to effectively power their homes without having to block the gorgeous views with unsightly power lines and poles. Speaking of power, each home in the Highlands is equipped with a 200-amp electrical service panel, making it easy for homeowners to utilize all of their devices simultaneously.

Home Highlights: Inside Features

Homes at the Highlands are thoughtfully designed, with extra nooks for storage space and opportunities to utilize rooms for multiple functions. My favorite room design is the kitchen layout, as it includes conveniently located pantries (which are, in most homes, separate from the cabinetry) and beautiful dark cherry cabinets. The cabinet drawers and doors are soft-close to eliminate unnecessary noise within the home. Appliances include a stainless steel dishwasher and an electric range with a micro-hood. The kitchen sink is a Kohler-brand single-basic vault sink with plenty of space for cleaning food and dishes.

One of the other interior highlights of these homes is the layout of the master bedroom and bathroom. This includes a separate shower and tub (with a shower/tub combination offered for each full secondary bathroom), solid-surface bathroom countertops, and vinyl plank bathroom floors. Master bathrooms also include dual sinks. Bedroom suites feature huge walk-in closets for additional storage space.

Original homes have been equipped for the set-up of additional features that may have already been initiated by previous owners. For example, each home has been prewired for a cable TV and phone system. Pre-wiring was also completed for the installation of ceiling fans. Homes have been pre-plumbed for split air conditioning systems, and additional accommodations have been setup for use of photovoltaic systems and electrical car charging. These features allow for future homeowners to make their own decisions regarding which wirings will work best for their family’s needs.

Kehalani Community

The Highlands subdivision is a part of the Kehalani master-planned community, which includes numerous housing and condominium neighborhoods. Residents enjoy the conveniences of neighborhood parks that are spread out across the community and connected via pedestrian-friendly pathways.

Additionally, the Kehalani community is located close to a variety of desired attractions. Residents are just a short drive away from several of Maui’s most famous beaches, and they also enjoy views of the West Maui mountains. The community is close to Wailuku city, which is a hub for businesses and also hosts many of the governmental offices, making it a quick commute for anyone working in these industries.

Kehalani is also located near the Kahului Airport for easy travel among and outside of the Hawaiian islands. Further attractions in close proximity to the community include museums, shops, wilderness areas, fine dining facilities, and historical landmarks.

The Highlands at Kehalani provides a combination of many desirable features—well-built, spacious homes within an active, pedestrian-friendly community that is in close proximity to schools, places of work, and recreational attractions. The Kehalani master-planned community has been a part of Maui for quite some time, and its subdivisions continue to flourish with new homeowners.
